How does Generic Desogen work?

Generic Desogen is a combination pill of estrogen and progesteron. Its main function is to prevent ovulation during your menstrual cycle. Additionally, it makes vaginal fluid thicker to prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg and changes the lining of the womb to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg.

Does taking Generic Desogen help protect me against sexually transmitted diseases?

Generic Desogen only protects women against unwanted pregnancy, it will not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases. To adequately protect yourself against STIs, you need to use another barrier method, such as a condom and spermicide.

Is it safe to take Generic Desogen while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Generic Desogen has been classed as Pregnancy Category X by the FDA, which means it could be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take this medication when pregnant or planning to become pregnant. If you do fall pregnant while taking this medication, contact your doctor immediately. If you have just given birth or suffered a miscarriage or abortion in the past 3 months, you should discuss reliable forms of birth control with your doctor. Find out when it is safe again to start using birth control that contains a form of estrogen.


Generic Desogen passes into breast milk, which may affect the milk production and have harmful effects on a nursing infant. It is not recommended to breastfeed while taking this medication. If you are currently breastfeeding you should discuss your options with your doctor.

Can I use alcohol while taking Generic Desogen?

Generic Desogen can cause such side effects as dizziness and changes in vision. Alcohol may worsen these effects. Limit your consumption of alcohol while taking this medication.

If I miss a dose of Generic Desogen, will I still be adequately protected against unwanted pregnancy?

If you miss more than one pill in a row or miss a pill in the first week of your cycle, it is possible that you will not be protected from pregnancy and should use some other form of birth control for at least 7 days to protect yourself from becoming pregnant. If you are worried or aren't sure if you're protected, use another form of birth control and consult your healthcare professional.
